Body and Soul

Body and Soul is a jazz ballad written in 1930 with music by Johnny Green and lyrics by Edward Heyman, Robert Sour, and Frank Eyton. Originally a popular song, it became one of the most popular vehicles for jazz improvisation, thanks in large part to Coleman Hawkins’ landmark 1939 recording, which focused almost entirely on improvisation rather than the melody. Over the years, Body and Soul has become one of the most played ballads by jazz musicians.
