What Is This Thing Called Love
What Is This Thing Called Love
is a jazz standard composed by Cole Porter, first introduced in 1929 in the Broadway musical Wake Up and Dream. Although resolving to a major key, the majority of the tune is in minor and is known for its fast-moving tempo, prominent half-diminished chords, and clear minor ii–V motion, making it a core standard for learning minor-key improvisation, chord function, and bebop language. Its chord progression also serves as the basis for the famous Tadd Dameron contrafact Hot House.
